Super Headends
The Super Headend (SHE) is the program origination point for
satellite-based IPTV distribution. Drawing on experience with both
traditional broadcast and IP-based networks, Globecomm develops
Super Headends for the acquisition, management, encoding,
origination and satellite distribution of IPTV content. Our services
include:
- Systems design, engineering,
procurement, integration, testing and turn-up
- 24/7 network monitoring and
support
- Lifecycle support for the
hardware and software we provide
Super Headend Elements
With one of the largest in-house engineering staffs in the industry,
Globecomm develops Super Headend facilities that deliver the
reliability and operational integrity needed in the demanding
broadcast environment. A typical SkyBorne Super Headend design
includes the following elements:
Program Acquisition System. To acquire programming from
satellites, Globecomm provides antennas of all sizes and shapes
including Torus and SimulSat Multi-Beam receive-only systems.
Globecomm also provides fiber-optic intra-facility distribution
networks and Integrated Receiver-Decoders (IRDs) in redundant 1:1
configurations.
H.264 Encoder Platforms. IPTV uses advanced compression
systems to reduce bandwidth requirements. Globecomm is experienced
in the design, integration and operation of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4
encoder platforms from manufacturers including Scientific-Atlanta,
Tandberg and Harmonic. We use these and other encoder platforms in
the operation of our award-winning Long Island International
Teleport, and have tested them for performance and interoperability
in our Broadcast Lab.
Conditional Access and Digital Rights Management. CA and DRM
systems ensure that valuable content reaches only authorized paying
customers. Globecomm has installed and operated conditional access
systems from Phillips (CrypoWorks), Irdeto, NagraVision CA and other
companies, and has tested DRM systems from WideVine and others in
the Broadcast Lab.
Automated Monitoring Systems. The multi-channel IPTV stream
requires automated monitoring to ensure signal quality during
acquisition and distribution. Globecomm has tested, integrated and
installed video and audio monitoring systems from Evertz, Miranda,
Barco and other leading providers at its own teleport and client
facilities.
Distribution Uplinks. For distribution to satellite,
Globecomm provides earth stations with all electronics (L through
Ku-band and all intermediate frequencies) needed to meet the
customer’s requirements for transmission and interface to
terrestrial networks. |
