VOD at the Regional Headend
Video-on-Demand provides each user with a world of choices - not in
more channels to view, but in the ability to enjoy what they want,
when they want, according to their desires and time constraints.
Globecomm provides IPTV VOD systems for Regional Headends and/or
other edge of the network facilities for the acquisition,
management, origination and terrestrial distribution of
video-on-demand content to the end customer.

System Design
With our experienced staff of broadcast engineers, Globecomm
develops and provides custom video-on-demand systems that deliver
the reliability and operational integrity needed in today's
demanding broadcast environment. A typical video-on-demand system at
a Regional Headend includes the following elements:
 VOD Content Acquisition. Content for VOD typically comes from
many different satellite-based channels. Globecomm provides
satellite receive only systems for the acquisition of VOD content
from major providers. This includes the appropriate VOD catchers
along with the necessary interface software to FTP pull the assets
and metadata from the catcher to the VOD server.
Ingest Gateway. The Ingest Gateway receives incoming programming
and converts it to digital files for later playout. The SkyBorne VOD
system incorporates a customized Ingest Gateway from Entone that
interfaces with all of the VOD sources thereby allowing multiple
providers of VOD content to access the IPTV Headend.
 VOD Server. The VOD server is the playout engine of the system.
Globecomm has chosen to integrate the VOD Server and Management
System from Entone, the number one provider of IPTV VOD systems into
SkyBorne.
Local Encoding Studio. Local content is extremely important with
regard to video-on-demand services. As a part of the IPTV
Video-on-Demand offering, Globecomm provides a Local Encoding
Studio, which includes MPEG encoders, VTRs and/or other playout
equipments, metadata generation, VOD file packaging and other
enhancements as required.
Middleware Interface. Middleware is the central foundation for
IPTV since it supplies the needed tools and technology to enable the
end-to-end IPTV solution. In this case, it is necessary that the
video-on demand system interface with a middleware system. Globecomm
can recommend, provide and/or work with any new or existing
Middleware System as required.
Distribution. The VOD system must integrate seamlessly into the
provider's distribution network. Globecomm provides total
integration of the video-on-demand system into the headend plant on
a turnkey basis.
Globecomm knows video-on-demand. Today, much of the world's
television and radio broadcasting moves through digital transmission
systems, networks, and studios designed and built by Globecomm.
