SkyBorne
Regional Headends
The Regional Headend (RHE) is the local gateway to IPTV programming
for telephone companies, broadband carriers, enterprises and other
new entrants into video services. The Regional Headend provides
content acquisition, content management, subscriber management,
packaging and delivery to the carrier's distribution network. An
effective RHE is also the access point for revenue-generating
services including ad insertion and video-on-demand. Drawing on
experience with both traditional broadcast facilities and advanced
IP networks, Globecomm develops, installs and supports turnkey
SkyBorne IPTV Regional Headends through:
- Systems design, engineering,
procurement, integration, testing and turn-up
- 24/7 monitoring and support
- Lifecycle support for the
hardware and software we provide
- Regional Headend Elements
The SkyBorne Regional Headend
consists of a pre-engineered set of building blocks that are
customized by our engineering team to the exact needs of the
customer. This modular approach, and Globecomm's depth of
engineering talent and experience, deliver the reliability and
operational integrity you need at a highly competitive price. A
typical SkyBorne Regional Headend includes the following elements:
Edge Receivers. Edge Receivers acquire the IPTV streaming
content from Super Headend satellite or terrestrial sources.
Typically, one Edge Receiver will down-convert a full satellite
transponder with 20 to 25 programs in the IP stream. Content can
come from more than one provider, and Globecomm's pre-engineered
Edge Receiver is designed to monitor, aggregate, and distribute
multiple receive streams simultaneously to the Ethernet Service
Switch (ESS).
Local Reception and Encoding. IPTV providers typically need
to receive local channels either off-air or via local cable or fiber
circuits and integrate them into the content provided to
subscribers. Pre-engineered local reception and encoding modules of
the RHE digitize, encode, IP-encapsulate, aggregate and transfer the
incoming local content to the ESS.
Monitoring System. The multi-channel IPTV stream requires
automated monitoring to ensure signal quality during acquisition and
distribution. The SkyBorne RHE includes an automated monitoring
module for all incoming and outbound channels. We are experienced
with the integration of best-of-breed monitoring technology from
Evertz, Miranda, Barco and other providers.
Conditional Access and Digital Rights Management. CA and DRM
systems ensure that valuable content reaches only authorized paying
customers. Globecomm has integrated and operated Conditional Access
systems from Philip’s (CryptoWorks), Irdeto, and NagraVision CA
systems. In addition, we have tested and evaluated DRM systems from
WideVine and others in our Broadcast Lab. Based on this experience,
Globecomm recommends, provisions and integrates the customer's CA/DRM
systems of choice.
Middleware. Middleware is the "operating system" of IPTV,
which supplies the essential tools that enable end-to-end
management. As an RHE provider, Globecomm recommends, provisions and
integrates middleware systems from a wide variety of vendors.
Ad Insertion. Advertising insertion systems create the
opportunity to add local and regional advertising to channels before
their distribution. Globecomm offers a unique advertising-insertion
module as a design option in its SkyBorne RHE.
Video on Demand. Video on demand systems meet subscribers'
need for television content when they want it. Globecomm provides
complete pre-engineered VOD solutions for the RHE that are
customized to customer requirements. Our VOD module includes an
Ingest Gateway, which can catch VOD-packaged files from multiple VOD
pitchers (sources) including TVN and ViewNow, and an Encoding
Station for local content VOD file and metadata generation. |
