RGB’s Universal Scalable Modulator (USM) Provides Europe’s Cable
Operators a Smooth Migration to Next-Generation Digital Video
Architectures for Delivering Personalized, Switched and On-Demand
Services
ANGA Cable, Cologne, Germany -- Network video
processing leader RGB Networks today announced the introduction of
its new high density Universal Scalable Modulator (USM) for digital
QAM modulation and upconversion. RGB’s USM is the most advanced QAM
modulator for the European cable industry, enabling cable operators
to gain new revenue streams and attract and retain customers through
the delivery of personalized, addressable, on-demand video services.
RGB’s USM also enables Europe’s cable operators to make a smooth
migration to next-generation digital video architectures, such as
Switched Digital Video, and modular cable modem termination systems
(M-CMTS), allowing operators to further increase the personalization
of their digital services. |

The compact, one rack
unit USM can support up to six QAM channels per RF port, for a total
of 96 channels in an 8 MHz QAM channel system, while multiplexing up
to 1280 digital programs, making it the European cable industry’s
highest density QAM modulator. With unmatched scalability and
programmability, the USM is the third product launched in Europe
based on RGB’s Video Intelligence Architecture™ (VIA). This launch
enables Europe’s cable operators to offer advanced,
revenue-generating services while significantly lowering capital and
operational investments. Typically the USM will be initially
deployed to provide enhanced VOD services while also enabling
operators to later move to an advanced architecture, such as
Switched Digital Video, using the same platform. The USM is
field-upgradeable without requiring a forklift replacement.
“The ANGA launch of RGB’s Universal Scalable Modulator provides
Europe’s operators with new revenue streams now and the flexibility
to move to an advanced architecture, such as SDV, in the future,”
says Sarah Hackforth, VP EMEA, RGB Networks. “The USM provides
Europe’s cable operators with the industry’s highest-density
solution for the roll-out of On-Demand digital services. As the
first truly universal QAM modulator capable of supporting multiple
applications, USM enables operators to maximize personalization of
services both now and in the future and is a highly attractive
solution.”
The scalable and modular design of the USM enables service providers
to minimize the cost of introducing new services and allows them to
benefit from a “pay-as-you-grow” model, through which additional QAM
channels can be licensed and added when needed to expand digital
video service deployments without the need for complete hardware
replacements. Leveraging the power of its Video Intelligence
Architecture, the USM can simplify and accelerate the future
deployments of advanced digital video services, including H.264/AVC
video delivery, without the need for costly hardware upgrades. The
USM also supports advanced, integrated redundancy options, pioneered
by RGB, increasing reliability and service availability.
RGB’s USM is also the first edge QAM modulator to offer a choice of
multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, as well as a 10 Gigabit
Ethernet interface for video input. The USM receives MPEG transport
streams over IP, performs multiplexing, digital QAM modulation and
RF upconversion, and outputs high-quality RF signals for delivery to
the home. In addition to supporting on-demand video applications and
architectures, the USM also supports IP video delivery services
based on DOCSIS 3.0 M-CMTS and DVB specifications.
