U.S. ranks sixth in 12-nation study that examines the “digital
readiness” of nations for interactive and personalized television
services, among other digital lifestyle solutions
Dallas, TX -- Next-generation television offerings that focus on
interactivity are likely to find widespread success in Spain, the
U.K., and Japan first, according to a new study from Parks
Associates. IP Video Services: Analysis and Forecasts reports that
targeted applications specific to enhanced communications,
personalization, interactivity and convergence between the home
computer and televisions at home have strongest interest among
consumers in nations where television operators have had experience
in providing these services and/or where significant development of
new television services, including IPTV, has already begun in
earnest. |
| Spain tops the list with nearly 80% of the population showing keen
interest in adopting these advanced TV features, especially those
related such interactive features as personalized recommendations
and voting abilities. The United Kingdom and Japan tied at the
second place with 75% of the population showing strong inclination
toward advanced TV applications. “Key to understanding the readiness
of a population for advanced TV services is an acknowledgement that
different populations have quite unique reactions and interest to a
variety of applications,” said Deepa Iyer, research analyst at Parks
Associates and author of the study. Consumers in the United Kingdom
are more inclined toward interactive features such as voting
abilities whereas the Japanese prefer personalization features such
as personalized recommendations, and one-button access
capabilities.”

Because of the uniqueness of
advanced television offerings, operators will be required to deploy
targeted services to each geography, and will require network,
software, and other solutions providers that can offer maximum
flexibility and scalability in such offerings as set-top box design,
middleware, electronic program guides, and home networking to
provide these offerings to their subscribers.
“The ‘one size fits all’ mindset regarding television services is
long gone,” said Iyer. The strategic advantage in the next phase of
advanced TV services goes to operators that can deliver targeted
solutions today that will then be expanded as their subscribers’
appetites for more advanced features become whetted and as they are
willing to pay for additional services.” IP Video Services: Analysis
and Forecasts provides an analysis of the drivers, inhibitors, and
opportunity for IPTV services from both a carrier and a consumer
perspective. It provides overviews of major players along the IPTV
value chain and delivers a country-by-country analysis of the
consumer demand for advanced TV services.
