FASTWEB has awarded Siemens and its global partner Juniper Networks,
Inc., a contract to further expand its broadband network in response
to the growing demand for Triple Play services from both residential
and business customers. As Italy's leading broadband
telecommunications company and the world's second largest IPTV
operator, FASTWEB will utilize its advanced broadband network to
broadcast all FIFA World Championship 2006 soccer matches over IP
and enhance Voice over IP (VoIP) services.
For this network expansion Siemens will deploy its multi-service
Surpass Carrier Ethernet technology and Juniper Networks E320
Broadband Services Routers, further enhancing FASTWEB's intelligent
network infrastructure, capable of supporting multiple service
offerings with increased levels of quality, security and high
availability. |

Surpass Carrier Ethernet from Siemens offers a comprehensive, true
carrier-grade "first and second mile" portfolio providing the
building blocks for a uniform, future-proof Ether-net-based
infrastructure right down to the subscriber. With the Surpass hiX
56xx multi-service DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access
Multiplexer) product family, which is supporting standard ADSL2+,
the first mile is no longer a bottleneck even for HD
(high-definition) IPTV and future high-bandwidth applications.
Siemens also supplies the world's first fully standard-compliant
VDSL2 systems for T-Com in Germany and is the market leader for VDSL
technology in Europe.
The Juniper E320 Broadband Services Routers provide the
intelligence, quality of service and bandwidth shaping features
required to deliver advanced, next-generation broadband services
over IP. By centralizing these capabilities in the broadband
services router, FASTWEB can cost-effectively add new services to
their portfolio, while ensuring service performance and subscriber
quality of experience at scale.
"As our IPTV, voice and video on demand services continue to attract
new customers, we remain committed to providing the highest levels
of performance, quality, reliability and security," said Guido Roda,
ICT Services Director, FASTWEB. "The solution from Siemens and
Juniper is an important milestone in our path to expand and
streamline our Broadband access infrastructure, as it combines the
ability to support even more compelling bandwidth-intensive, high
quality Triple Play services with the scalability and the reduced
total cost of ownership of native Ethernet transport technologies."
"With our Surpass Carrier Ethernet portfolio we provide carriers
with network infrastructures that can be managed easily and
cost-effectively and open the door for attractive Triple Play
services, such as IPTV, fast internet access and other high-quality
communication services and entertainment offerings over a single
pipe," said Christian Unterberger, head of Fixed Networks at Siemens
Communications. "With our secure and multi-service infrastructure
integrated with the new generation Juniper Broadband Service Router
we are helping FASTWEB to deliver its customers an intelligent
network and the highly advanced services that go with it."
FASTWEB's multi-service offerings
FASTWEB offers its residential subscribers multiple value-added
services, including television (IPTV), over its broadband network.
The combination of IP technology and bandwidth have allowed
FASTWEB's residential customers, both with a fiber optic and a DSL
connection, to receive traditional broadcast television, multicast
(Pay TV and Pay-per-View) and unicast services (video on demand and
interactive TV) over FASTWEB's network. FASTWEB will multicast all
2006 FIFA World Championship matches, which is proving to be a
driver in attracting new customers. FASTWEB is also testing HDTV
video on demand and multicast transmission over high speed DSL
connections.
