Showcases end-to-end solutions for SD/HD compression in IPTV headend

TANDBERG Television, a leading supplier of open solutions for digital broadcasting and broadband, will showcase its market-leading encoding solutions for IP television at the upcoming Telco TV show in Orlando (November 16-18, 2004). Visitors to the TANDBERG Television booth will be able to hear about the company’s lead in IPTV deployments and the development of bandwidth-saving advanced encoding solutions for standard definition and high definition MPEG -4 AVC and Windows Media 9 Series (SMPTE VC-1). They can also view an operational TANDBERG E5710 MPEG -2 encoder, designed for premiere channels that require the ultimate compression performance for movies, sports, entertainment and other fast motion, highly detailed programming. TANDBERG Television ’s open architecture enables telcos to add E5710 encoders to existing headends in need of high-quality MPEG -2 encoding without interoperability issues.

“Our aim to is to provide telcos with the industry’s most complete and best performing IPTV solutions and to enable them to make the right choice of compression to suit their business models. Our track record of deployment and our extensive partnerships demonstrate that we understand the IPTV market and that we’re able to deliver high-quality solutions that make telco business models work,” said Carl Furgusson, head of broadband at TANDBERG Television .

TANDBERG Television comes to Telco TV riding a wave of IPTV successes. The company recently announced important IPTV contracts with PCCW in Hong Kong and Sistema in Russia, bringing its tally of real-world IPTV deployment to over 30. TANDBERG Television has taken a pioneering lead in the development of professional, broadcast-quality SD and HD encoding solutions for both the MPEG -4 AVC and Windows Media 9 Series advanced encoding platforms . Both platforms significantly reduce bit rates compared to MPEG -2 and are key enabling technologies for telcos with bandwidth-restricted DSL infrastructures. Moreover, TANDBERG Television’s recently launched HD encoders for MPEG -4 AVC and Windows Media 9 Series produce excellent HD image quality at lower bit-rates for live TV than ever seen before. The massive bit-rate reductions of up to 60% on MPEG -2 performance enables new and improved business models and improved operational efficiency by creating the ability to offer HD services on some ADSL networks to the home where previously only SD was possible.
