Strengthens five year relationship with interoperability qualification of TANDBERG’s iPlex UltraCompression HD and SD high-density encoders

Amsterdam -- TANDBERG Television, part of the Ericsson Group, today announces that its award-winning iPlex™ UltraCompression high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) IPTV solution has passed Microsoft’s® interoperability and qualification testing. The move means that operators can deploy the Microsoft Mediaroom™ IPTV and multimedia software platform together with the latest TANDBERG IPTV encoding solutions, benefiting from industry-leading density and bandwidth improvements of up to 50% over previously deployed MPEG-4 AVC units.

This advanced technology integration marks five years of collaboration by Microsoft and TANDBERG Television to drive forward the delivery of connected TV. It delivers a comprehensive solution for new revenue-generating IPTV services with more channel choice, as well as the efficient introduction of HDTV and on-demand video offerings over DSL and FTTH broadband networks. TANDBERG Television was one of the first partners to integrate its encoding solutions with Microsoft’s IPTV platform. Today, operators can choose from a wide range of TANDBERG Television encoders for HD and SD MPEG-4 AVC and SMPTE VC-1, as well as select broadcast 1RU or telco chassis-based options, which have been qualified for interoperability with the Microsoft Mediaroom platform.

"Our vision is to enable the best connected TV experience worldwide and we are excited to work with TANDBERG Television to make this happen,” said Joe Seidel, director of global partner development for the Microsoft TV business at Microsoft. “Our service provider customers around the world are deploying our solutions with the confidence that they have been fully tested in our labs, as well as in trial and commercial deployments."

Being debuted at IBC (Hall 1: 568), the iPlex UltraCompression HD and SD IPTV head-end product is based on TANDBERG Television’s world first, next-generation AVC platform. It provides a step change in digital video distribution by combining the broadest choice of density and enhanced features with the industry’s leading picture quality performance. The TANDBERG iPlex is a flexible video processing platform, rather than just being an encoder chassis, and offers the industry’s most complete IPTV head-end video processing solution that includes MPEG-2 SD encoding, MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD encoding, MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transcoding, MPEG-2 transrating, and picture-in-picture (PIP) service generation in a high density, NEBS-certified, telco-designed chassis. TANDBERG Television is the recognized leader in video compression with over 4,000 MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD encoders commercially deployed. It is the only player to offer complete solutions for HD and SD MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1.

“As the leading provider of IPTV head-ends, we have extensive real-world experience of IPTV deployments and are continually innovating. We are delighted to see our latest IPTV encoders qualify for interoperability with the Microsoft Mediaroom platform. Together we can continue to drive the deployment of IPTV around the world, enabling operators to rapidly react to emerging opportunities, with future-proofed infrastructures that meet evolving needs and enable the design and launch of revenue generating services,” says Alan Delaney, IPTV business development director at TANDBERG Television.
