Canadian telecoms equipment manufacturer Nortel has started
discussions with potential takeover targets in key markets such as
IPTV, VoIP and enterprise in order to expand its reach, according to
a Reuters report citing an interview with CEO Mike Zafirovski. |

The executive has suggested that
Nortel believes that as it now has a tighter grip on its financials
it is in a position to consider acquisitions. Companies targeted
reportedly include 3Com, Tellabs, Sonus Networks and Foundry
Networks.
“We are doing lots of analysis internally on how to grow the company
organically and we started discussions recently with companies that
we believe can be added to our growth trajectory,” stated Zafirovski
in the interview. “We’re confident that we’ll be able to
successfully integrate other activities if the price is
appropriate.”
Nortel has just released its second-quarter results, which fell
short of analyst expectations. Revenue in the second quarter of the
year reached US$2.562bn, down 8% from the same period of the
previous year, and posted a small loss rather than the expected
small profit. Zafirovski is however confident that Nortel will
achieve full-year revenues the same as, or just slightly below, last
year's $11.4bn. |
