Software Ensures High-Efficiency Media Distribution to Regional Head-Ends and Subscriber STBs

Dayton, OH -- Stratacache today announced OmniCast for Push VOD, a new, software-based solution for IPTV and on-demand video providers who want to achieve maximum scale, performance, and efficiency with their existing network equipment and servers while ensuring fast and reliable access to content for their subscribers.

Many existing service provider content distribution mechanisms rely on inefficient FTP-based transfers, which extend the time and bandwidth requirements for replicating media to hundreds of thousands of endpoints. OmniCast for Push VOD leverages Stratacache’s patented multicast distribution technology to enable simultaneous media distribution to tens of thousands of endpoints such as regional servers or subscriber set-top boxes (STBs). OmniCast’s open API makes it easy to integrate with existing content storage or management applications on media streaming servers, encoders, and other components of the VOD delivery ecosystem.

“The network bandwidth required to support IPTV networks will become a major issue as the number of subscribers on these networks grows from a few hundred thousand to a million or more. In addition, the migration to video-on-demand and network PVR services will further compound the problem by significantly increasing the amount of unicast traffic on these networks,” said Bob Larribeau, program director for IPTV at the Multimedia Research Group. “OminiCast has correctly identified optimized content distribution as a key issue in these networks.”

IPTV and VOD service providers are wrestling with several different on-demand network architectures, trying to assure fast and reliable content access for their subscribers without breaking their business models by spending too much on infrastructure. OmniCast for Push VOD provides a cost-effective solution to elegantly push content across a network serving tens of thousands of devices without any negative impact. Thanks to its world-class transport efficiency and patented multicast delivery protocols, OmniCast for Push VOD dramatically reduces the time it takes to distribute new content, and eliminates the network congestion caused by tens of thousands of individual content requests. OmniCast for Push VOD works in any IPTV or VOD network, easily integrating with solutions from leading content security and encoder vendors while servicing either unicast or multicast network segments.

OmniCast for Push VOD features an automated distribution system that allows providers to queue up encoded content in advance of a user request and have it automatically pushed at a pre-determined bandwidth level to an edge device without manual intervention. Providers can easily create subgroups of users (channels) and push special-interest content to the STB as a further value-added service.

“Push VOD is rapidly becoming a popular method of improving customer service while reducing network costs,” said Chris Riegel, president and CEO of Stratacache. “OmniCast for Push VOD allows on-demand providers to reliably push content to the consumer STB, improving the user’s viewing experience while actually lowering network infrastructure, bandwidth consumption, and costs.”

Consisting of both client and server components, OmniCast for Push VOD uses the same core technology that has made OmniCast the best-selling distributed enterprise content distribution solution worldwide. Every day, the world’s largest organizations use OmniCast to efficiently and reliably deliver multiple terabytes of data or video to hundreds of thousands of locations across the globe.

OmniCast for Push VOD is available immediately.
