DLR has awarded a contract to SHM Broadcast GmbH –T-VIPS’ German Business Partner, to supply T-VIPS TVG420 Video Gateway Technology as part of a low-latency video link between the DLR Columbus Control Center, the NASA Johnson Space Centre, Houston, TX and the Russian Space Centre, Moscow, from where craft docking is ultimately controlled

Oslo, Norway -- T-VIPS AS, a Norwegian technology company that designs, builds and supplies world-leading solutions for contribution & distribution of broadcast quality video signals over IP networks, today announces that its TVG420 IP Video gateway has been chosen by DLR, the German Aerospace Center, to play a vital role distributing video from the International Space Station to the Russian Space Centre in Moscow. This video is monitored at the Russian Space Centre to ensure the safe docking of the Soyuz, Progress and Automated Transfer Vehicles with the International Space Station.

“For the video to be a useful tool in controlling the docking of spacecraft with the International Space Station, it’s crucial that latency is minimized. To do this we designed a system architecture that only required encoding/decoding at the ISS and at the Russian Space Centre, in addition we chose the proven technology of MPEG-2 as it provided the best combination of image quality and low latency,” says Ground Operations Manager, Thomas Müller of DLR.

The video of spacecraft docking with the International Space Station (ISS) is encoded to MPEG-2 at the ISS, down-linked to a ground station in the USA and distributed over fibre to the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, TX. At Houston a T-VIPS TVG420 encapsulates the MPEG-2 video stream into IP and distributes it to the DLR German Space Operation Center (GSOC) near Munich, from where it is distributed onwards to the Russian Space Centre. At the Moscow Mission Control Centre the IP encapsulated video is received by a T-VIPS TVG420 and converted back into MPEG-2 ASI format. Crucial features of the TVG420 are advanced de-jittering and Forward Error Correction functionality, which ensure that Moscow receives a perfect signal, in spite of network jitter and packet loss.

“The T-VIPS420 Video Gateway brought to us by SHM Broadcast, was the only solution that provided both the functionality and low-latency we required in a field tested solution. I’m sure it’s obvious to all how important it is that the docking of a spacecraft with a manned space station is controlled properly, for such an important task the combination of functionality, low-latency and the proven reliability of the T-VIPS420 solution made it the only possible choice,” concluded Felix Lang, Video Engineer, DLR.

“We were aware that DLR required a video transport solution that combined low-latency with high reliability and knew that the T-VIPS TVG420 solution was the best solution for this important application,” says Michael Preisser, Managing Director and Partner, SHM Broadcast GmbH. “We organized a demonstration for DLR’s technical team of the T-VIPS solution, after which we worked with the DLR and T-VIPS technical teams to enhance the TVG420 to meet DLR’s demanding specifications. This project was completed and tested successfully in a short time-frame at which point DLR awarded us the contract to provide the T-VIPS intelligent video transport solution. I look forward to working with T-VIPS to ensure that we can provide DLR with innovative video transport solutions to meet any future requirements.”

“It’s a great honour for our equipment to be chosen for such an important application,” says Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “We often talk about mission critical video applications, this is perhaps one time where the timely arrival of high-quality video truly lives up to this description. The choice of our solution by DLR sends a message to all broadcast and video professionals that IP video distribution is now suitable for all video transport tasks, however critical.”
